Akufo-Addo appoints Mike Oquaye Jnr as CEO of the Free Zones Authority

• Mike Oquaye Jnr has been appointed CEO of the Free Zones Authority

• He will replace Okyere Baafi who is now the Deputy Minister of Commerce

• He was Ghana’s High Commissioner to India during the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration.

Former Ghanaian High Commissioner to India, Michael Oquaye Jnr has been appointed Director General of the Ghana Free Zones Authority.

Several reports indicate that Mike Quaye Jnr was handpicked by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the role.

He succeeds Michael Okyere Baafi, now Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and Member of Parliament for Juaben Sud.

Michael Oquaye Jnr is the son of former Speaker of Parliament Prof Miike Oquaye and served during the Akufo-Addo government’s first term as High Commissioner in India.

The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) was established on August 31, 1995 by an Act of Parliament, the Free Zones Act of 1995 (Act 504), with the mandate to promote economic development, regulate activities in free zones and related purposes in Ghana.

The Authority’s vision is to help transform Ghana into the ‘gateway’ to West Africa by creating an attractive and conducive business environment through the provision of competitive free zone incentives and the operation of an efficient “one-stop-shop” for the promotion and strengthening of national and foreign investments.

Dr Michael Aaron Oquaye Jnr. is the former Ghanaian High Commissioner to India. It had simultaneous accreditation in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Dr Oquaye is a Barrister by profession. He is a lawyer specializing in international investments with extensive experience in project finance, infrastructure, mergers and acquisitions, general contracts and commercial transactions.

His global experience is primarily focused on business and emerging markets – countries of business include UK, US, ECOWAS region and South Africa.

His varied areas of legal practice are in the sectors of energy (oil and gas, biofuels and renewable energies), media and technology, telecommunications, raw materials and agribusiness, among others.

His professional experience spans many years in the UK and Ghana. His last job in the UK was at 9 Kings Bench Walk, Chancery Lane, London, where he worked with famous lawyer AI Mustakim.

In Ghana, he is currently Legal Officer at Exusia Law Consult with renowned lawyers such as Dr Yeboa Amoa (First Managing Director of Ghana Stock Exchange) and Ms Essie F. Cobbina (Cocoa Board Ghana).

He was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales at the Honorable Society of Lincoln’s Inn and later to the Bar of Ghana. He holds a BL from BPP Law School in Holborn, UK and an LLB from Oxford Brookes University in Oxford.

He is also pursuing an LLM in Oil and Gas at the University of Dundee, Scotland, UK. He is married to Maureen Oquaye and they have three children.
