Atmanirbhar and a global leader: Prime Minister Modi’s agenda for India’s agricultural sector

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the first physical NITI Aayog board meeting since the start of the pandemic, made the case for modernizing India’s agricultural sector using technology so that the India can become self-sufficient and a world leader in the agricultural sector.

The meeting was held today at the Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Center in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister, speaking on the issue of rapid urbanization in the country, said it should be treated as a strength rather than a weakness by leveraging technology to ensure ease of living, delivery of transparent services and the improvement of the quality of life.

He said India should become self-sufficient in edible oil production.

The Prime Minister also spoke about India’s upcoming G-20 Presidency in 2023. India will hold the G20 Presidency from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023. The G20 comprises the world’s major developed and developing economies, representing 85 % of GDP, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the world’s population, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

To make the most of the initiative, Prime Minister Modi has called on states to set up dedicated G-20 teams.

The meeting was attended by 23 Chief Ministers, 3 Lieutenant Governors and 2 Administrators and Union Ministers.

NITI Aayog Board of Directors

The Governing Council is the primary body responsible for developing a shared vision of national priorities and strategies, with the active participation of States, in shaping the development narrative.

The Governing Council, which embodies the goals of cooperative federalism, presents a platform to discuss cross-sectoral, cross-departmental and federal issues to accelerate the implementation of the national development agenda.

Sunday’s Board of Governors meeting considered four key agenda items

– diversification of crops and achievement of self-sufficiency in legumes, oilseeds and other agricultural products

– implementation of the National Education Policy (PNE) in school education

– the implementation of the NEP in higher education and

– urban governance
