Yet Epstein is also an “enthusiastic cheerleader” who insists “today is the best time to shop.” Why? The author sees sourcing becoming “a destination of choice for visionary leaders and high-performing employees looking to engage in goal-oriented work.” Of course, digital transformation is the essential catalyst for all this value-driven work ”.
Bold predictions, detailed prescriptions
The main body of the book offers a holistic view of this digital transformation, including many bold predictions. For example:
- Procurement organizations around the world face a prolonged era of ‘No Normal’ as massive disruption is now ‘the reality of our world’
- Enterprise-level suites will continue to be supplanted by more agile startups that “make everything inherently open and integrable” via the “twin revolutions” of microservices architecture and an explosion of new, innovative sourcing startups
- The digital transformation will bring about “a new supply ecosystem that is built on a solid database, offers a plug-and-play choice of easily integrated applications, offers users a pleasant and burden-free experience, and has a layer of intelligence that produces information across the entire operating system. “
For these purposes, the prescriptions offered throughout the book (eg, “How to shop digitally”) are richly detailed, clearly integrated, and illustrated with many anecdotes and real-life examples.
Epstein concludes, “Digital operations can transform sourcing into the most mature, intelligent and exciting function in the business. In doing so, we can be part of the solution to society’s biggest problems. Now is the time to meet the present moment.
