In the next weeks, George W. Bush and Donald trump are set to clash again with the future of the Republican Party, as they vie for the 2022 race for the sole Wyoming House seat. In a gesture of declaration, Bush would appear as a “special guest” at a campaign event in Dallas next month in support of the anti-Trump Republican representative. Liz cheney– arguably Trump’s main target since she voted for her second impeachment after Jan.6. Cheney, the daughter of the former vice president of Bush, Dick Cheney, was stripped of her House leader post in May for her criticism of Trump, and last month Republicans in three Wyoming counties voted to no longer recognize her as a GOP member.
Cheney’s October 18 campaign event which the The Wall Street Journal, former senior officials of the Bush administration will also be present. Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, and Karen Hugues, is expected to take place just over a month after Bush apparently compared Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol to Al-Qaida terrorists during his memorial speech on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. September 11th. “There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home,” he said. “But in their contempt for pluralism, in their contempt for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same filthy spirit. And it is our permanent duty to confront them. Trump did not take the punches while lying down, quickly issuing a statement noting that “the World Trade Center fell for [Bush’s] Look. Bush ran a failed and uninspiring presidency. He shouldn’t lecture anyone!
Trump has already backed Cheney’s opponent Harriet Hageman, and pressure is mounting for other GOP candidates in the Wyoming race to drop out and circle the cars around Hageman. However, Trump’s dislike of Cheney didn’t necessarily work out the way he might have hoped. Since Trump stepped up his campaign against her, Cheney has dramatically stepped up his fundraising efforts; the congressman grossed nearly $ 3.5 million in the first two quarters of 2021. And Cheney’s condemnation of Trump supporters who instigated the Capitol riot led to her appointment as vice-chair of the House selection panel investigating Jan.6, a position that could give her a visible platform from which to argue her case.
Bush’s support for Cheney in next year’s midterm race has apparently lasted for months. Freddy Ford, Bush’s spokesman, reported in January, story Politico, “We’re not thinking about the next election cycle yet, but I know President Bush plans to call Vice President Cheney tomorrow for two reasons: to wish him a happy 80th birthday and to thank him for the service his daughter has rendered. “
If Trump succeeds in toppling Cheney, she will join the growing club of lawmakers who left their seats after criticizing Trump. More recently, Rep. Anthony González from Ohio announced his retirement last week while lamenting the “toxic” political environment smoldering within his own party. “You can fight and win this thing, but are you really going to be happy?” The answer is, probably not, ”he said. The New York Times. “That’s the direction we’re going to go for the next two years and potentially four … It’s not something I’m going to be a part of.”
