AUSTIN, TX (AP) – Marcus Carr scored the best 20 points of the season and No.17 Texas beat outnumbered West Virginia 74-59 in the Big 12 opener, ending the The Mountaineers’ eight-game winning streak. West Virginia played without starting goaltender and leading scorer Taz Sherman with reserves Gabe Osabuohien and Kobe Johnson. All three are in COVID-19 protocols. Texas led by 28 with 13 minutes remaining, but West Virginia used enhanced shots and fierce defense to make the game more competitive.

WITHOUT DATE (AP) – Another G League referee was called in by the NBA to work a game today as the league continues to find ways to play through the latest coronavirus outbreak. Sha’Rae Mitchell has been awarded the San Antonio-Detroit game. She becomes the fourth referee in the G League called up in the space of two days. She also becomes the 15th woman in league history chosen to participate in a regular season game. Mitchell has worked in the G League since 2018. His appeal comes as the NBA referee body continues to deal with several officials who have issues or injuries related to the virus.

WITHOUT DATE (AP) – Quarterbacks for the national championship game will be a former five-star rookie already with a Heisman Trophy and a former replacement ending a long journey with his home state team. Sophomore Bryce Young is Alabama’s first quarterback to win the Heisman. The Southern California native won the award in his first season as a Tide starter. Stetson Bennett is the Georgia-born kid who joined the Bulldogs five years ago. The two threw three touchdowns in the CFP semi-final games. The title game is on January 10 in Indianapolis. It comes just over a month after Young and the Crimson Tide beat Bennett and the Bulldogs for the SEC title.

SIGULDA, Latvia (AP) – Germany’s Francesco Friedrich was undefeated in 2021. He won’t repeat the feat in 2022. Friedrich’s streak of 21 consecutive World Cup wins was interrupted today after his worst result in more than four years. Russian Rostislav Gaitiukevich was the surprise winner of a two-man race, teaming up with Mikhail Mordasov to win. Brad Hall and Greg Cackett’s British sled finished second. Benjamin Maier and Markus Sammer from Austria finished third. Friedrich finished only 12th.

WINTERBERG, Germany (AP) – Germany’s Johannes Ludwig has won his fourth race of the season and strengthened his lead in the overall World Cup standings. Ludwig set the third fastest time in both heats, but took advantage when first leaders Nico Gleirscher from Austria and Dominik Fischnaller from Italy struggled in their second heats. Gleirscher finished second. Fellow Austrian Wolfgang Kindl finished third. Chris Mazdzer was the best American and finished 20th.
