  • Trump’s ex-assistant Stephanie Grisham describes the conversation in her upcoming memoir.

At G20 summit in 2019, President Donald trump asked the turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and assistants to the foreign leader if they had seen the controversial 1978 film “Midnight Express,” according to upcoming memoirs by former Trump aide Stephanie Grisham.

“It’s a dark movie for you guys,” Trump told the Turkish delegation after asking the question, according to Grisham’s book. The Guardian first reported the account.

Grisham writes “that there was little reaction from the delegation” after Trump’s “out of the blue” comments. She adds that there were “maybe a few polite laughs, before the conversation continued, as if the President of the United States had not let it slip.”

The Oscar-winning film, about an American imprisoned at Turkey after attempting to smuggle hashish out of the country, has been criticized for describing the Turks as vicious and violent and damaging the country’s reputation. The director of the film, Alan Parker, and his screenwriter, Oliver Stone, have said that they regret how the Turkish characters in the film were portrayed. The movie is widely despised in Turkey.

During his tenure, Trump has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Erdoğan, who has led an increasingly authoritarian government that jails journalists, political opponents and Americans. Erdoğan also held Referendum in 2017, this greatly expanded its power.

After the 2020 elections, Congress adopted economic sanctions against Turkey for the purchase of Russian missile defense systems.
